Whether playing, reffing, or taking your kids does anyone have any experience? I got asked to attend and officiate and just wondering what to expect.

This was 15+ years ago, but ODP in Louisiana was a joke.

ODP is a joke

waste of money and has tons of politics involved

the ODP model is out dated and one of the things holding the development of soccer back.

Ya, I did one or two back in the 90s. Super political.

Lots of entitled suburban parents looking for glory in their poor unsuspecting kids.

I will be representing Louisiana but it's a regional camp located in Alabama. There's a total of 12 states involved. Just got more info that I will be receiving training from former MLS refs so I'm a lot more excited about it now.

Since you're officiating it should be cool.

As far as the teams being picked and everything I think is what we all are talking about.

That's what I thought. Should've been more clear I'm going as an official

Interesting read on ODP and its relevance when viewed against DAs, ECNL, and other "premier league" options:

You are going to regionals. Just be fair and call it the way you see it. The quality of officials in Bama is terrible and very very inconsistent so no one knows what a foul really is here and it’s not all the parents fault. Because a card in Huntsville, is a foul in Montgomery and nothing in Mobile. Fans here expect completely biased bullshite from officials because we see it all the time. ( I have a complete film library of it with respect to some privilegeGuru and some refs on here I have been part of some legendary poorly called biased games, per coaches of other teams. In one a player actually struck an official and got a red card which they tried to overturn.)

Just be fair and everyone will be pleasantly surprised. If you are from Louisiana I would be slightly biased against Louisiana.

ODP, at least in AZ, is about money. It is useful for a couple things though.

As a player, the initial tryout is great for tryout experience and to gauge your level against other good players.

If you play at a small club, it is a good idea to participate for exposure. Otherwise, there's not much of a benefit. Not a lot is taught as far as soccer education. The camps are basically scrimmages and tryouts, not actual camps.

TL;DR go to the initial tryout to see if you make the pool, but don't fork over the cash to go past that.

Two of the best players I know did ODP in middle school through high school and it got them nothing. I still firmly believe that they could have been very good professional soccer players, but the politics in ODP and in big soccer programs in general turned them away. So sad.

The whole ODP system is screwed up. I did like the quality of the training and coaching buts that’s it.

And everything in soccer is about money

What's funny? Do you have better advice?

If you have a shitty coach for club, then give ODP a shot. The "camps" aren't really educational or developmental though. They are just extended tryouts.

Gonna be a great time and you should see some really good kids out there. I played ODP when i was younger for two years in the early 00's and i totally agree that the system in place is stupid. Basically a money grab where we would just play keep away for 2 hours for practice while my parents paid a bunch to travel and play, but going as a Ref should be a great experience.

The worse striker on our high school team was an ODP kid, so was the best. Hell we were mostly ODP and we have zero state championships to show for it
