I won't say they will be better, particularly because they won't be, but it isn't unfathomable to think they might actually transition to life without Bale fairly well.
Odd that he scores 20 league goals (more than double last season's) and the club's total goals scored doesn't improve from last season. Some can obviously be attributed to losing Modric and VdV, but they also brought in a couple players who were supposed to score more than they have.
He's a highlight player. He doesn't make the players around him better. His conversion percentage is only average. He doesn't play at a high level for 90 minutes, and it's no coincidence his assists dropped by 60% from last season to this season.
For those reasons, certain players will always be more valuable to me. I'll take an RvP, Suarez, Mata, Cazorla, Silva, Hazard, Coutinho, Benteke, Lukaku, Rooney, Carrick, Gerrard, Lampard, Tevez, Toure, etc. before a Bale.
He's perfect for Madrid, and with the 40-50m Tottenham stand to make from his sale, they could go in the direction of one of those types of players and improve the squad IMO.

Hmm. Haven't really thought of Bale that way...but it makes a lot of sense. Then again, I was the stubborn about my view of him as the POTY.
I swear he had more assists this season.

After seeing how the team stand around and watch Bale, I don't think your far off with that assessment.

Couldn't agree more. Bale may score some great and timely goals, but he isn't the type of player I would build a team around. Spurs are in a position to really make their team better if they handle his transfer sum right (assuming he actually leaves). If they can get a dependable striker and sure up the defense, they will be better off without him.

If I heard the commentator correctly, 9 of his 21 league goals have come in the last 10 minutes of matches. It may seem greatly beneficial for very nearly 50% of his goals to come in "crunch-time," if you will, but it really isn't.
It generally means he needs 80% of the match to find the form to culminate in a goal. That can be detrimental to a squad's psyche - "Gareth will save us."
I'm not sure if you watched the match today or not, but I swear he lined up the exact same shot that he scored on at least 3-4 times. It's like he was priming his left foot to make that shot at some point.
You compare him to a player like Juan Mata, for example, and it fricking blows my mind how Bale won POTY over him. He has scored 12, assisted 12, creates chances at a higher rate and finishes chances more efficiently (10% more efficiently, to be precise). Moreover, he's superb in link-up and elevates the play of everyone around him by a significant margin.

Only thing that matters is spuds are f'ed. If bale stays or goes they are still spuds and need to mind the gap. 19 years running. Happy St. Totteringham's day

They hardly choked. In their last fourteen games they had nine wins, two draws and only two losses. That's 30 points out of a possible 42. For comparison, only two teams had better form, Man U and Arsenal. Man U won the same amount of points in the last 14 games. Arsenal was lucky to a big extent. They got a very favorable schedule while finding their best form. This isn't like last season when the collapse was more pronounced. That doesn't excuse drawing to Wigan, which did them in, but this hardly indicates a choke.

It's called banter..it isn't supposed to be taken literally.
Sheesh.
Sheesh.

Oh. You know I don't banter. I'll see myself out.

I watched the entire second half of that match. That's exactly what he was doing.
Bale would be, like you said, perfect for a team that already has a Mata/RvP/Cazorla/Silva/etc. What he can do is amazing, but he doesn't make the rest of his team better...and Spurs relied on him too much down the stretch.
Put him on a Real Madrid (or, in my perfect world, Manchester United...if we're selling Rooney, get rid of Nani and go after Bale...front four of RvP, Bale, Kagawa and Valencia
) and he'd continue to be a highlight player...but on a stronger team. Then he could get service from Di Maria, Ozil, Benzema (and vice versa) and not be the only big gun out there.Posted on 5/19/13 at 6:46 pm to crazy4lsu
Yeah, a 7 point lead with 10 matches to go is choking.

Yeah, I mean, the thread is just banter, but I thought so as well. A 50% win rate in the last 10 matches with CL on the line is weak.

But would you take him to round out out front 3, with Cou pulling the strings??
Not enough balls to go around with them 3 shooting..

You should continue to refer to teams you don't like with only catchy nicknames. It's so cool that you do it every time!

You should continue to show that his use of those nicknames bothers you greatly.

How did you like that series against Ole Piss brah?

I really only do it with your team. U mad? Can't be as bad as last year, can it?

That's the win rate I would expect given a team of Spurs quality and depth. If anything they were punching above their weight under a new system. Arsenal just played a lot better than everyone down the stretch, which is a characteristic of Wenger's post-Invincible teams (by which I mean extremely streaky teams). Tottenham had as good a form as Man U and Chelsea down the stretch. From Feb. 1st onwards they and Man U were equal on points. Again in that time, Arsenal scored 35 points out of a possible 42. That is insanely good form for any team. That's title winning form. I'm arguing here just to argue, as I'm happy that Tottenham faltered.
Also reading the match report on Tottenham's 2-1 win over Arsenal, I came across this gem.
quote:
Villas-Boas will remember, of course, that Tottenham surrendered a 10-point lead to Arsenal last year, but this Spurs team is made of stronger stuff and Wenger's side appear to lack the same heart, particularly in defence.

I only went on Thursday, which was an awesome game to attend. Plus, I scored some great seats for free. It was pretty awesome. I REALLY hope my firm gets that deal. It would mean I'd be traveling to LSU for the next 5 years or so.

Please... No one is more level headed about this than me. I follow a team on another continent that I've never seen in person, in a country I've never been to.
Maybe it's that my 13 year olds immaturity is annoying the shite out of me right now, but seeing someone say LSWho, ULaLa, Spuds, etc., just makes me sad for the world.
