The red card to Boyata definitely changed the game, but it was the proper call. Arsenal's goal was class, but even a man down City have looked the better side at times. Tevez has been moving slowly late in the half, I could see him being subbed. Ade was warming up

I'm happy with our play thus far. Tevez will have to come off soon. Sub Ade for Carlos, and AJ for Milner.

Richards has played really well today. Barry is killing us out there with his lead feet.

Difficult to overcome an early red card against a team like Arsenal. They could probably handle it against a Wigan or Wolves.

Citeh have played well despite being a man down.

Yeah I'm as happy as I can be considering we're probably looking at a loss. We NEED to get Barry and Bridge out of there though.

Oh look Super Mario is coming on!!

Well that was the worry about Kolo not being fit. We put Boyata in and got the worst possible result.

We'll be fine in the long run. Our entire team will finally be fit soon. Boateng and Balotelli are back, Kolarov and Kolo coming soon. Boateng and Richards have been playing well. And David Silva is looking like he'll be a star in the EPL.

We NEED to get Gareth "the statue" Barry out of there. I hope we go CDM shopping in January.

And hopefully with all of our defenders fit we'll NEVER see Wayne Bridge on the pitch again.

Barry isn't a defensive midfielder. City has plenty of options there with Toure, De Jong, and Kompany. What City needs is much harder to find, and that is a deep-lying playmaker which Barry attempts to emulate, but fails horribly in that task. One solution might be to play Silva centrally and deeper with Johnson and Milner outside. The problem with that is that it seems both seem to operate best on the right, and would significantly alter the balance of the team, for numerous reasons, i.e. playing two inside out wingers who cut in on their stronger foot makes it absolutely necessary that your fullbacks make supporting runs, something I'm not sure City can manage on the left. I'd go buy Ever Banega from Valencia, who would displace Barry and would give the wing players and the strikers some quality service. Banega is under-rated at the moment, but someone is going to pick him up for cheap if Valencia keep selling.

Thoughts on the game:
Like I said, Boyata was not the right choice. Regardless, boyata has to know better than that. You can concede a goal, but you cannot go a man down in five minutes. It was the right call by the ref. We played great for 60 minutes after that with some good chances and dangerous runs. I honestly did not expect us to do that well, especially against a team like arsenal who can run you ragged with possession. We were actually able to keep up in the midfield. For that effort, I am very proud. At about the 65 minute mark the running was really showing. Tired legs plus arsenals passing game equals goals. Good penalty save by Hart as well. Honestly not too upset about this loss as it could've gone very differently. Good game by richards, hart, tevez, silva, and boateng.

Interesting assessment. I agree that barry is out of place, especially in the current 4231. Banega would be an awesome replacement who would give us some more offense. Trouble is that mancini loves CDM who are defense first. That's why he has played the barry de jong tandem all season, even if they aren't perfect. I don't think mancini would go for banega even though he could serve the front and support johnson/milner on the left. It will be interesting to see what happens in the wake of todays game and if we change up the 4231. I have been trying to picture other formations that could accommodate banega, silva, etc and can't think of too many.

The De Jong/Barry combo is fairly typical in midfield, with the creator type in De Jong and the passer/B2B type in Barry. The trouble is that Barry hasn't ever been a true deep-lying playmaker, England doesn't seem to produce those types very often, he's more a B2B player who's slowed down significantly. Barry doesn't break play up well, he doesn't get technical fouls to stop counter attacks, he doesn't have a tremendous work-rate. The only reason he's on the field is because he's supposed to start the attacks, which he doesn't do a very good job of doing. He was 23 of 27 passing today, while in comparison, Denilson (Arsenal's deep lying playmaker) was 72 of 77. Barry doesn't do enough as a passer to warrant his selection.

In that view, Man City should buy Banega or another similar type player, and drop Barry altogether. Mancini should stress defensive discipline, and either play Tevez up front with AJ on the right and Silva on the left, with Banega in front of Yaya and De Jong, basically a 4-3-3, or play a 4-2-3-1 with a combo of a DM and a deeplying playmaker deep, Silva behind Tevez or on the left, Milner or AJ on the right, and someone else on the left. I've never trusted Mancini tactically, though he will most definitely have a disciplined team. I can't seem him picking the correct team from game to game.

spot on with your barry assessment there.
I wasn't disagreeing with your choice of banega, I just was having a little trouble thinking of a formation that would accommodate de jong, banega, silva, yaya, tevez, and potentially balotelli while still meeting mancini's defensive mantra. I honestly hadn't considered playing yaya in barry's place because then you leave out Milner. Now that I think about it, Milner doesn't really fit the 4231 we are playing right now. We could also try a 442 with silva and tevez stacked as the forwards. then the lineup would be

-----------Tevez-----------------
---------------silva--------------
Milner---yaya/de jong----banega---AJ
kolarov---kompany---kolo---boateng

When playing de jong it would be like mancini's inter diamond because his wing backs can run up the sides and contribute.
