but in the real world you can't just go around pushing people in the back and provoking them and not expect a physical response.

There's a big difference between a 'physical response' and a kick to the head and punch in the face.
ETA: Erwin says he tried to shake the animal's hand and the animal said 'frick off', leading to the push.
