There just aren’t enough Americans doing STEM degrees whereas it seems there’s a large supply of foreigners that have them.

What do you think would happen if employers were persistently starved for STEM graduates and didn't have imported labor as an option?

In many cases we wouldn’t fill the position. Math based jobs are tough to fill.

The unemployment rate for STEM majors is around 3%. It’s not like there are a mass of Americans starving for these jobs.

I used the word persistent but let me be more clear. Long term, what do you think would happen if employers were starved for STEM graduates and didn't have imported labor as an option?

As has been demonstrated quite clearly, these people simply cannot grasp second order effects or conceptualize how incentivizing these types of things can have compounding effects 10, 15, 20 years down the road.

The article the graph comes from proves my OP in this thread correct.

the 65k cap is complete bullshite. They grant 2-3x that many NEW visas each year.

Wages would have to go up to compete for the limited supply of these individuals. However, offsetting this you would have less available jobs, because as you increase cost, you get less of it.

You don't think employers would force a come to jesus moment with politicians, and those politicians would start getting at least a little serious about education? It's not like you're arguing that Americans are too stupid to earn STEM degrees, right?

The PDF you provided, and Rog blindly believed like a clapping seal, doesn't say anything about the number of new visas granted vs the number of renewals/extensions.

Your numbers are right there in the graph.

No it didnt. You need someone to teach you what "renewal" means?

That’s a very rosy scenario linking multiple chains of events that at best is decades in the future. Even assuming that comes to fruition, you have the foreign STEM degrees going somewhere else. What prevents them from developing the competing product(s) to our American ones?

That very rosy scenario already happened for O&G.

Oil companies have invested a ton into american universities to develop talent.

The government admits to granting about 160k H1B visas per year

I didn't see that number in the earlier posts, so I'll take your word for it.

quote:

You're claiming the vast majority are 1 year renewals.

They are. Most every employee and company that makes it to the 6 year mark files to extend. There are 85,000 given in an H1B lottery (by law), which means that your other 75,000 would be people making it to apply for renewal, and the other 450-500k or so are still working under their initial visa term.

Does that make sense? It's the best explanation I can give without access to the 160k source.

The word renewal does not appear in the article.

BTW the article also reveals that the government granted fewer extensions than new visas.

People seeking to extend their visa are actually the SMALLEST group of visas awarded each year.

God damn you are dumb.

My industry is not oil and gas so I can’t speak to what they’ve done or how their industry works. My broader point remains though.

Extensions represent only 20% of the visas granted.

quote:

Approved petitions for initial employment include petitions for new employment (30%) and new concurrent employment (<1%).

Petitions for continuing employment include requests for extensions (20.4%)

The other 50% are people amending their visas or changing employers.

They call it "continued employment, extensions.."

Overwhelmingly continuations (renewals) are biggest group.

This is incorrect.

The 160k are NEW visa.

They grant an ADDITIONAL ~100k in extensions
