Why the frick is this even major news? I don't want to be 'that guy'...but wrongly accusing someone of theft is pretty generic and happens all the time.

I just saw a situation like that 3 days ago. An old man in my neighborhood had an old woman in my neighborhood take him to cash his social security check and his covid relief check. Bank was closed, so she brought him back home. Before he got out of the car, she told him not to forget the checks.. he took them and left. A few hours later he lost his checks. He accused the old woman of stealing them. He even called the police and detectives were sent to investigate the old woman. Everyone in neighborhood knew the old man was mistaken, because this old woman is well known by everyone, she has a very kind heart. The old man however, is mistaken a lot and often picks fights with other neighbors.
