Why didn't they just let the guy that they appointed to finish out Session's term finish Session's term?

I mean, I know it's Alabama law, but why? Why appoint someone to fill a seat only to hold an election a few months later to fill the seat?

Because appointments aren't elected by the population of the state.

Maybe someone can correct, but I believe if the seat remained an appointment it would have had to be contested in 2018. Not sure what difference that would have made, though.

Not sure, each state is allowed to set their own procedure on how long Senate appointments may last until a special election must be held.

It's three years. Then Dougie can retire with a nice pension, write a book and attend Auburn home games for free.

The American Dream.

In 2 years. This fills the last 2 years of Sessions term, then an election for a full 6 year term.
