I just can't believe anyone in their right mind wants that job for the low pay Louisiana public teachers make. At least no one with any ambition does IMO.
Let's be real. Teaching doesn't pay THAT bad, the requirements for a degree and certification are among the simplest of all fields, and many women who go into teaching are simply looking for something to pay the bills until they find a husband.
Starting pay at our local school is $39K a year. That's not great money by any means, but that's just starting pay , for right out of college for 10 months worth the work . Around here anyway a twenty something just out of college could live alright on $39K a year. Certainly you wouldn't be living like a King, but you wouldn't be a pauper either.

There are highly intelligent people on both sides of the political aisle. It's easy to assume we disagree with people because they are stupid (sometimes they are ) but there's a lot more that goes into forming an opinion on a subject aside from raw intellect.
And while I mentioned 2 people, I actually realized that the disagreements with the one poster is primarily related to things that have a religious basis, and unless it's Roy Moore level arguments, I think religion is an understandable basis for disagreements that are a little more emotionally charged. So in retrospect, I actually agree fairly often with that poster when that basis is removed.

Why is that wow? You think someone with ambition wants to earn $36K a year and top out at $50K only after 28 years? I don't unless they are stuck.

hit me up i don't anticipate being very busy the remainder of the year
my setup may not bring in the big bucks (as of yet) but it allows a lot of flexibility

the plant worker/teacher combo is a legit household strategy around here
I agree but I still feel like it's just settling for some people.

AKA settling which is what I said earlier.

Teaching pay in Alabama is pretty dang good, and they get guaranteed yearly raises. They just scream and holler about it like it's awful.

Sounds good. We'll go to the Nugget and grab a good NY strip from Vic & Anthony's

You're too caught up with the money side of this, if they're happy doing it, so be it. There are a lot of teachers out there who are proud.

Agreed
But you also don't seem to empathize with the fact that money isn't the number one priority for everyone. I could have made double what I made in the military in the private sector. I loved the military though.
As far as that goes, I'm 47 now and have no job. And believe me a retired US Army Colonel with a PhD from Princeton has many job options if they so choose. I choose NOT to work. Am I settling?

I'd teach again for 40k a year if it allowed me more time for professional LARPing. Also my IQ is 157, confirmed by my aunt who was in the Coast Guard. They wouldn't send any little old person LARPing, would they?

There are other factors too of why I feel like a lot of people are just settling with teaching as a career but I just used money because it was low hanging fruit.

I agree but you assumed they are happier than me and I assume it's a thankless job for low pay. Let's just agree to disagree and move on.

the problem with teaching today is that it's so regulated and shite that you're not making THAT big of an impact a large % of the time
tons of bad schools where you can't make that big of an impact
tons of schools/districts that neuter a teacher from being anything other than a pre-programmed lesson plan distributor

Obviously a different situation and no way to compare the two.

I don't disagree with your assessment here at all, that's for sure.

I'm consistently an NPC, but occasionally I play a nefarious leprechaun with a heart of gold, with a 159 IQ.

At 13 it was a 172. Since that time I’ve started drinking, reading and posting on a site called tigerdroppings, published papers, been awarded patents, earned a PhD and now am a department head of a fledgling engineering department so I assume it’s dropped significantly.

You should get it and just help people in SETX sue their insurance companies over Harvey claims.
I am recruiting subs in Houston right now for a ton of hazzard work the banks will be sending me soon. I just had my recruiters get Florida covered for the same reason.
