Obviously neither you nor I know the exact answer to this. But I think what the FBI would say (and this applies to any “extremist” group that they could legitimately help fund/organize) is that they set up these operations to root out extremists who are trying to find opportunities to act out on said beliefs. ie they are “protecting” us from the crazies by finding them, bringing them out of the woodwork, and putting them behind bars for the crimes that the FBI essentially helped them to commit. I think that’s BS, but it’s the answer I would give if I was FBI director trying to justify my organizations involvement in Patriot Front, for example.

My more pessimistic answer is, the FBI (and all government agencies) need to justify their existence AND the need for an ever expanding budget. As long as Patriot Front and ANTIFA and Proud Boys and whoever else you want to name exist, the FBI NEEDS more money and more agents to monitor them and keep the American people “safe.” They are spending money and organizing groups of people in order to ask congress for even more money. They are essentially stoking the flames that necessitate their existence, using it to increase their budget, power, influence.
