Public health and national security experts shake their heads when President Donald Trump says the coronavirus "came out of nowhere" and “blindsided the world.”

They've been warning about the next pandemic for years and criticized the Trump administration's decision in 2018 to dismantle a National Security Council directorate at the White House charged with preparing for when, not if, another pandemic would hit the nation.

Trump's elimination of the office suggested, along with his proposed budget cuts for the CDC, that he did not see the threat of pandemics in the same way that many experts in the field did.

“One year later I was mystified when the White House dissolved the office, leaving the country less prepared for pandemics like COVID-19,” Beth Cameron, the first director of the unit, wrote in an op-ed Friday in The Washington Post.

She said the directorate was set up to be the “smoke alarm" and get ahead of emergencies and sound a warning at the earliest sign of fire — "all with the goal of avoiding a six-alarm fire."

When Trump was asked on Friday whether closing the NSC global health unit slowed the U.S. response, the president called it a “nasty” question because his administration had acted quickly and saved lives.

“I don't know anything about it,” Trump said.

Earlier, when asked about it, he said: “This is something that you can never really think is going to happen."

that story has been debunked, but even if it was true, what could they have done?

I didn't say anything about testing kits in my post. Try your talking points elsewhere.

Why did he call it a press conference in the first place?

The office — as set up by Obama — was folded into another office. Thus, one could claim the office was eliminated. But the staff slots did not disappear and at least initially the key mission of team remained a priority. So one can also claim nothing changed.

The question that cannot be answered — at least perhaps until a congressionally mandated commission examines the U.S. preparation for this crisis — is whether a separate directorate would have had more clout to bring the issue immediately to the president’s attention. That might have helped buy time to stem the spread of the disease by focusing the full attention of government on the emerging problem. (One example: China refused to let American experts into Wuhan — a discussion kept at the agency level. But early presidential pressure might have swayed Beijing to cooperate.)

The changes made apparently didn't sniff this pandemic out quick enough to prepare for it, plus, we are not medically prepared apparently to deal with it either. Who's fault is that? If we respond to a nuclear attack like we did for this virus attack...well, we'd all be dead.

Apparently, the WHO tests were never offered or available to us. The CDC did screw up the first batch but seem to have recovered.

I think he/ they didn't take it serious soon enough. By taking it serious, I don't mean shutting things down. It means spreading caution to maintain good hygiene and protect those that may be more susceptible. Also, he let the media get in front of him with the fear and panic. He didn't get out in front of that talk to keep people and leaders calm.

Maybe have a plan to deal with a pandemic? Sure, the specifics of any plan would have to be changed depending on the specifics of the virus/disease in question, but everything the administration has done has seemed very reactive, as if they’re always one step behind, not thinking 2-3 moves in advance.

Saying things like “who could have ever predicted this” while in the best-case scenario diminishing the role of the team whose job was to predict this is a bad look. None of the groups people have thrown around as the culprits (CDC, FDA, HHS) are anything but executive branch agencies. If there were deficiencies in these departments, maybe it’s fair to question the person in charge. That’s a really tall order, but when someone consistently tells people they’re a genius whose big brain can stop all the problems, people will eventually ask why we have problems.

What a moron

Liberal filth called him a racist because he banned travel from China immediately.

If we had a worthless frick Democrat as president it would be far worse because of political correctness.

China virus , China virus
