Middle class differs
My Mom lives in Cali. Her 75k a year and my step dads 300k a year translates about evenly to my 100k a year and GFs financial aid

quote:Many potential anecdotes.
Feeling “rich” is more about being content with what you have—rather than counting how much your neighbors’ have. .
Here's one:
MsNC could shop anywhere she wants. When shopping locally, she preferentially goes to Walmart, Sams/BJs/Costco, Marshalls Home Store and Steinmart. She says she gets the same stuff cheaper at those stores.
A neighbor and she were talking one day. Not knowing MsNC's shopping habits, the neighbor offered she'd "not be caught dead" in Marshalls or Steinmart. Instead, she shopped at Nordstrom's, Neiman Marcus, and Whole Foods as if it was a wealth banner trying to impress MsNC.
She and her husband have since downsized out of the neighborhood. We stay in touch. They're concerned about retirement in 10 years. Sadly she's still heavily focused on "appearances" and "keeping up with the Joneses".

35K-80K in general. So much of this depends on how many people you support and where you live. Single making 30K in the south is probably comparable to 70K with a wife and two kids up north or on the west coast.
