It pulls people together to show support for the victims family and allows the community to mourn and pray together. Only an a-hole would question the need for human contact for comfort after a great loss.

Ehh. Anyone can ‘show support’ but when the rubber meets the road how many of those people ‘showing support’ are actually going to do something to ensure there isn’t the need for 10 more vigils? How many of them are going to have honest conversations in their communities? Or vote for politicians who are really going to change things? Vanishingly small in my estimation.
