What exactly is the basis for this assertion?
I'm genuinely interested to see if this is actually true and what data there is to back it up. Anyone have the data that the media and politicians are using?
FBI reports it seems when I Google it, keep saying 17% increase.
I just downloaded the file of 2016 and 2017. It seems the number of hate crime victims was 7,615 in 2016 and 8,828 in 2017. The total incidents reported from 6,121 to 7,175. That's probable the 17% increase they are reporting.
I also googled "hate crime 2018 examples" and got this:
https://www.justice.gov/hatecrimes/hate-crimes-case-examples
Includes Tree of Life Synagogue, Charlottseville Rally, and some other terrible crimes.
To try and explain some of the increase of 1,054;
Skimming the website, there seems to be some changes in reporting though. The Agencies submitting incidents increased from 1,779 to 2,040. A 14% increase. The participating agencies and population covered increased by 5.8% and 5.7% respectively.
A few interesting would be on schools/colleges, since those are generally the fake ones. The increase went from 604 to 753, or 149.
Other than that, it seems to be a pretty standard/marginal increase between the tables.
I'm definitely someone that hates fake hate crimes and would love to see the data on it and how it has impacted this, but I also believe in data and won't dismiss something because it sounds like a convenient talking point for deranged leftists.

Here's a wiki summary with a few more details.
It's interesting that the "2018 examples" pertain to convictions from earlier years - for example, this story pertains to a crime that occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which I seem to recall was not in 2018.

"Trump 2020".
The fact is, the left is scared to death of him. They have now been foiled TWICE over the last month in the national headlines trying to tie fake hate crimes to him.
Look for some creepy shite to go down, between now and then.....

It makes you wonder how many previous of these fake crimes never saw the truth.
9/10 the fakehate crime disappears into oblivion with zero action taken.

I'm just curious if these cases are mere reports and not confirmed, prosecuted cases or an increase due to a constantly expanding threshold of what is deemed a hate crime

Dunno, maybe the agencies/methodologies and stuff is on the FBI website. I didn't check.
