I honestly can’t fathom how any ideology with such institutional monopoly would remotely consider themselves “resistance”

Because they don’t think they have a monopoly. You have people that argue half the media (including CNN) is definitely moderate. It’s common for people to make themselves feel like the underdog even if the the reality is that they are the powers that be.
