Interesting fact: I have met Rusty Calley. I’ve been to his place of business and to his house. He was a small guy. Probably 5’5” and very soft spoken. I believe he was an alcoholic. I think all of that really affected him. Last I heard, he died a couple of years ago.

A latter-day Alexander Haig. A politician in uniform.
And it's My Lai.
And it's My Lai.

Many of my earliest recollections involve listening to my grandfather telling all the menfolk that Johnson was a murderer! This was back in the late 40s.
The Box 13 scandal. Coke Stevenson and LBJ were in the Democratic Primary for US Senate in 1948. Stevenson seemingly won the election, but 6 days after the polls closed, an additional 202 votes were added to a precinct in Jim Wells County. 200 of them were for Johnson. He won by less than 100 votes.
A year after the election, a radio journalist is murdered by Sam Smithwick, who just so happens to be the Deputy Sheriff of Jim Wells County. Soon after, Smithwick writes a letter to Coke Stevenson from prison about the fixed election. He was soon found dead in his cell. No doubt LBJ was the man behind all of it.
