1/1024 = 0.09%.

NYT 2014 article: "The researchers found that European-Americans had genomes that were on average 98.6 percent European, .19 percent African, and .18 Native American."

Well it said 6 to 10 generations so the median would be 8 generations, or 1/(2^8), which would be the 1/256 or 0.39%, which is still meaningless given HER STORY. It would be cool for someone researching their own ancestry, but she presented it as an issue her own mother dealt with, which is just ridiculous.

Right. Getting nit picky with the numbers is kind of irrelevant when you consider she a.) used her "heritage" to get jobs and b.) was claiming her Indian heritage was so strong that her mother was looked down upon by her father's family

And, of course, she might just be 1/1024 South American and have 0/1,024 Native American ancestry...

Per the Boston Globe:
quote:

Detecting DNA for Native Americans is particularly tricky because there is an absence of Native American DNA available for comparison.

This is in part because Native American leaders have asked tribal members not to participate in genetic databases. “The tribes have felt they have been exploited,” explained Lawrence Brody, a senior investigator with the Medical Genomics and Metabolic Genetics Branch at the National Institutes of Health.

Her father's family really had to be have been able to smell a redskin when the wife was at best 1/500 Indian.

Is that because many Europeans share genetic markers with Mongols, and the mongols shared genetic markers with those who crossed the land bridge 15000 years ago?
