Government workers are generally useless. Getting rid of 10-15% by saying no remote work is a great start.

They need more remote work IMO. The amount of the buildings the gov owns is staggering. Just move them out of DC where the bureaucrats want to keep the buildings full so they get kickbacks.

This is just going to drive the productive employees out, and leave government with the people who don't do anything whether working in office or at home. Government can't compete on compensation, so if flexible work arrangements help bridge the gap why shut the door on them?

Every company has unproductive workers. No one is immune. The high productive workers in the government don't stay because of pay. They make 30-50% less than their counterparts in private. If they decide to remove remote work, they will lose them too. The issue is not being able to let go of the bad performers.

I once worked for the State of Arkansas. People actually slept in the offices because they was nothing to do. Working for home has nothing to do with it.

It will be interesting if they try this how they handle Schedule A hiring (disabilities). Will they be required to come into work?

quote:This is exactly true. Speaking for my agency, I had a hard time getting really good people before the ability to remote work. It is hard to compete with what industry pays, being able to offset that with QoL benefits was HUGE. And as many have said, people who F off at home, will do so in the office, but there they will distract others. The REAL issue is the federal morass that makes it near impossible to remove non-performers. If Elon and Vivek are truly serious about this, they would put their platform and power towards eliminating the red tape there instead of suggesting things that make good headlines, but are not productive.
