Their base pay before was $18k, but that doesn’t include the per diem and other perks they were receiving.

It is low and one argument is only people with money already can take that as a job. So you limit who can realistically run.

Here is a quick google of Alabama Senators:

State legislators should be part-timers. Get rid of the per diem, adjust the mileage allowance and it's not a bad deal.

True. I was just assuming Alabama was objectively more backwards than Virginia and that they would pay state senators like 5 bucks
