What was your first clue? Darkness? One transmission line went off at one power plant then others followed.
The last US east coast outage was one tree branch that caused a short. Protection relays were not set properly and the cascade took every plant offline. The only thing saving them from days of startup were the hydros that did not go offline.
The Montreal outage was different. Ice on the transmission lines collapsed the towers. Miles of transmission lines laying on the ground. Montreal within one hour of losing the water plant. To get up and running they built transmission towers from power poles. Later they designed mega towers that are every third or forth tower, built to handle ice loads.
