Putin's going to screw that country. The Ruble is down, their market is down liek 20%, and capital and investments are leaving at an alarming rate and Russia's GDP projections for 2014 are predicting a contraction of economy as a result, which is a contraction of revenue.
taking over and supporting Crimea an building infrastructure will cost billions. engaging in a war in Ukraine will cost billions. All while no one will invest in russia, and Europe looks to become less dependant on what amounts to 50% of Russia's GDP - energy.
Let Putin figure out what it took the US the last decade to figure out. War isnt cheap. you better have a resilient economy and deep pockets. They have neither. Thought he would have learned form the collapse of the USSR.
Oh well. Those who dont learn from history are destined to repeat it. Ukraine will get their territory back when Russia collapses.

Don't forget Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic, is doing very well these days with oil.

Oh I dont think he wants all of Kazakhstan...but they do have massive oil/gas and REMs there in the relatively uninhabited northern areas.
Putin has no reason to go for Kazakhstan. They're already friendly to Russia and in the Customs Union, whose trade terms are ludicrously friendly to Russia. Kazakhstan was required to implement a common external tariff amounting to 11.1%, meaning their trade is funneled into Russia even more than it already was, and customs duties are collected on a per-capita basis so Russia gets 88% of those. That's why the Ukranians were ready to riot over being dragged into the Customs Union instead of the EU, it's a racket run for Russia's benefit. As long as Nazarbayev remains in power and stays loyal to Putin, Kazakhstan will be fine, because Russian companies are going to be the ones drilling/mining all those resources anyway.

I get a sense after talking to a Ukrainian a few days ago, that they are so fed up with the corruption, that becoming part of Russia looks good to them. Their economy is damn bad.
not a chance in hell

Ukraine's corrupt leadership has little respect within the country.
Its b/c of Russia they had corruption.

Is it possible we are not sharing everything because we fear Russia has people in Ukraine’s intelligence/military leadership?
