quote:

U.S. military officials sought permission to send an armed drone near a patrol of Green Berets before a deadly ambush Oct. 4 in Niger, but the request was blocked, raising questions about whether those forces had adequate protection against the dangers of their mission.

quote:

One focus of military investigations into what happened in Niger will be what a military official now says were two changes in the mission of the Green Beret team—from initially training Nigerien forces, to advising on a mission to capture or kill a wanted terrorist, to investigating the terrorist’s abandoned camp.

quote:

The initial decision against the use of an armed drone reflects an effort by the U.S. mission in Niger to maintain a light footprint in the country amid local resistance to the deployment of armed aircraft—a challenge for officials also seeking to adequately support U.S. troops there.

So there was a “no air support order” from Washington? Sick bastards murdered our own boys.

We've been involved in Niger for a few years now. It's the next frontier for fighting terrorism. Islam is the fastest growing religion in Africa.

We're selling them arms. I imagine this is a "consulting" type of thing.

Arms that will soon be used against us, most likely.

It’s absurd drones aren’t used more when humans are involved. They’re so damn cheap.

I was under the impression that Islam was a religion of roses and rooftop celebrations? Not the case I see if our boys are getting shot up. We need to get out of Africa and let Africa do Africa things...

That's not what my superior officer was saying to me when I flew one into a mountain.

You must've failed to yell "aloha snackbar"

It's considered retaliation to counsel you after that.

Operating costs for an MQ-9 armed drone are equal to or more than that of an F-16/A-10.

Sure, Islamic terrorism to a certain extent. But, if you really want to know why we are increasing our presence there (and Africa in general), take a look at what mineral resources are becoming increasingly important. Then, look at where many of those resources are located. Finally look at what other nation is also establishing a presence there in an effort to obtain those resources (rhymes with blina).

Hearing a drone overhead makes you feel a little more badass.

I’d like to know why the drone was denied. When there are limited assets and competing priorities in an AOR, one thing can’t be at two places. I’d assume it was otherwise tasked.

I’d like to think that anyways rather than believe we left our soldiers high and dry.

Africa is a big place and there aren't a lot of assets in the region.

Combat is rarely a neat package where everything goes right, often it is just the opposite

I would like to know the answer to this question.

My suspicion is that the "mission" was intended to be covert and someone had a concern that running a drone over it would compromise that.
