The final chapter in the contentious battle between Speaker Dade Phelan and challenger David Covey hasn't been written yet, with the incumbent Phelan and Covey heading into a May 28 runoff for the State Representative District 21 seat.

quote:

The district includes all of Orange and Jasper County, and part of Jefferson County.

quote:

With 99% of the vote counted late Super Tuesday night, Covey had 9,967 votes or about 46%. Phelan had 9,629 votes or about 44%. Alicia Davis had 2,053 votes or about 10%, enough to force a runoff.

quote:

Phelan advanced to the runoff with rival David Covey, a former chairman of the Orange County Republican Party who has been endorsed by Attorney General Ken Paxton, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller and former President Donald Trump.

quote:

The May 28 runoff promises to be a high-profile slugfest in this elbow of Texas that borders Louisiana. Both candidates and their surrogates will likely spend millions of dollars trying to sway voters in what are typically extremely low-turnout contests. So far Phelan has spent $5.3M to Covey’s $861K.

quote:

Covey’s campaign has been heavily funded by Defend Texas Liberty, the political group mainly bankrolled by Midland oilman Tim Dunn, a Paxton ally and conservative activist. Covey positioned himself as the true conservative in the race who would remain in touch with the party’s grassroots rather than gallivant around Austin as a glad-handing politician.

quote:

Phelan countered with accusations that Covey, who has never before served as an elected government official and is simply a pawn of Paxton and other far-right interests. Phelan’s base of support included many local Republican leaders in his three-county district as well as former Gov. Rick Perry, who appeared with the speaker on the campaign trail in Beaumont, Vidor and Jasper ahead of election day.

quote:

Not only had Paxton and Patrick publicly called on Phelan to resign last year, but the speaker also earned the ire of Gov. Greg Abbott when the House sunk the governor’s school voucher proposal. Phelan did not cast a vote. Abbott did not endorse anyone in this race, appearing indifferent to Phelan’s political survival.

quote:

Phelan had cruised to victory in previous contests, and no incumbent House speaker has lost a primary since Rayford Price in 1972, but this was the most difficult reelection he has faced. Polling by the University of Houston showed last month that Phelan was the most unpopular Republican leader in Texas.

shite, that's too close to comfort. The race has to be highlighted and needs strong turnout. I'm pretty sure Phelan is banking on low turnout to win the runoff. I hope the Bannon War Room is beating the drums everyday to get is posse' in this district to get out and vote. Phelan needs to be defeated.

The anti Phelan side seems well motivated. And Alicia Davis ran on an anti government tax and spend platform so hopefully a significant number of her voters will move to Covey.

You’re welcome. Thought it best to put it all right there in the thread of title.

I'm not a Texas resident but this race is very important in terms of weakening the Bush/Rove wing of the GOP. Dade Phelan is a cancer to the GOP.

Dang, I thought he was defeated outright.

We need to keep focus on this.

Recent reports reveal House Speaker Dade Phelan’s largest donor to date in 2024 is a D.C.-based PAC that may be misleading donors and spending to empower Democrats. The Republican State Legislative Committee donated $750,000 to Phelan on February 2, 2024, a sum that dwarfs the $200,000 that the Casino Lobby Sands donated the following week.

quote:

According to a review of the RSLC website, the organization says it is focused on electing Republicans to office. In messaging, both for soliciting funds and announcing the group’s objectives, RSLC mentions Democrats as the opposition, not other Republicans.

quote:

RSLC added two Texans, ignominious in conservative circles, to the group’s board of directors in April of 2023: former Speaker of the House Joe Straus and Karl Rove. In 2023, Rove publicly advocated for the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton; Straus, in 2024, spent time publicly supporting Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign.

quote:

Dade Phelan currently serves on the group’s Legislative Campaign Committee. It is unclear if the RSLC knows the Texas Republican Party censured Phelan or that he has, in contradiction to the party platform, refused to stop appointing Democrats to chair committees.

$5.3 million on a seat in the state house of representatives. Our system is broken.

As I recall, Phelan was caught up in some type of controversy in the summer before or right after he was given speakership. Something to do about screwing over other Republican representatives that led to an investigation. Then it all just died out and he surfaced as the RINO he proves to be today.
