Disinformation. Well now that sounds familiar.

Turkey’s media is already controlled by their government. (Also familiar)

Now it’s going after the only digital media outlet available.

Disinformation=Anything that threatens the narrative

quote:

Turkey's parliament on Thursday adopted a law proposed by President Tayyip Erdogan that would jail journalists and social media users for up to three years for spreading "disinformation", despite deep concerns over free speech.

quote:

The issue of media freedom is of growing significance ahead of next year's presidential and parliamentary elections, with surveys showing support for Erdogan and his AKP tumbling since the last vote.

For the record, Turkey's constitution allows free speech as long as it doesn't criticize the government. It's a big deal over there.

So not Free Speech?

At least over here, it’s very hard to distinguish anything in todays society that isn’t political and thereby extension, the government or at least a government position.

Not our free speech, but definitely an improvement on typical Muslim culture, which is the framework it was built on.

Agreed. It’s amazing how easily we take things like this for granted and then some people who just want to piss it away.

I completely agree that disinformation is fuel for fraud and mischief and that society as a whole would be better off without it.

But when you have a law like this the big question becomes, who gets to define disinformation?

And right at that point we run off into a whole new manipulation game with different rules.

That's why we're better off without any rules like this.

People just have to exercise caveat emptor.
