Right. But one of the two had name recognition and had represented KY-4 for 10yrs.

Looking at the thing in more detail, KY primaries are closed. So only KY-4 registered republicans were allowed to vote (which would seem to make Massie's Dem endorsements very counterproductive). There are about 308K registered republicans in KY-4.

So the reduced pool changes the enthusiasm contention slightly. Massie actually needed 18.5% of registered republican supporters in KY-4 to take the effort to show up and vote for him. He got about 15%.

My point is, when folks whine about KY-4 being bought, Massie did not lose d/t money. He spent >$15M in a district race. He lost d/t lack of enthusiasm and poor turnout. The whataboutisms applied to other districts in an off-year with 100-fold less money, have zero relevance.
