Trump's immigration plan a step in the right direction BUT fails in two important areas

I like Trump's emphasis on more merit based immigration. This is a starting point.
I would like to see two issues addressed:
1) add financial criteria such as a requirement of health insurance for green cards--no need to bring in folks to work if they are going to use our welfare too
2) dramatically increase green cards---we will probably actually issue less given the merit based criteria and MY proposed financial criteria but there really should be no limit if people are paying their way. We should make it easier for resident illegals who are already working on fake IDs to come clean if they meet the financial and merit criteria and are not on welfare.
This would be a great plan as we would encourage producing, tax paying folks to come and we would separate our the illegals already here who are not paying their way and are sucking on welfare while protecting those that are paying their way and contributing.

I'm so glad you're not in charge

Trump's plan is DOA and has ZERO shot at passing through Congress.

you must want to let people come in on Trump's merit system alone so they get on welfare.

So that's the only two options? You're acting like as long as they can afford their own way we should have an unlimited amount to accept. Overpopulation is a problem no matter if everyone is paying their own way or not.

Overpopulation of parasites is a problem. More productive citizens is not a problem. In fact more productive people will ease the burden on the productive people we currently have.

Only if it's coupled with continued welfare ineligibility, because the temptation would be to load up on whatever welfare they could get, while working fewer hours.

Fails in another important aspect:
BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP FOR SPAWN OF ILLEGALS
**Should have brought up the 14th amendment needing review by the SCOTUS as to its applicability to illegals and their spawn at the time of its passing
THE CURRENT BASTARDIZATION WAS NOT THE INTENT

Can we trade the financially stable and responsible green card holders for some of our own citizens that are on welfare? One in one out? If so I'm all for that.

I would be too.
Certainly we would be isolating the dead beat immigrants and would have standing to deport them

Wrong. More productive people add to society.
I doubt seriously if you put the criteria I propose on the number of actual green cards that would be issued would not increase BUT if that is possible we should take advantage of it so our economy and society benefits.

IBTariffman is all for cheap imports whether it's products or labor.

You are very narrow minded and have no economic sense that I can detect.

I love how union workers at US Steel mills have been getting raises from the tariffs. That must really drive him apeshit.

I think you buried the lede. This sounds like a major amnesty program (not that I disagree).

Some might call it that. In their naivety they believe we can round up all these people and deport them somewhere.
What it's been 10 or 12 years since the so called amnesty bill that would have made better and tighter immigration laws failed in Congress?? No one has proposed or passed anything better and the problem is worse than ever.
There is no need to even attempt to deport working, tax paying people who are not on welfare.
Why do it? It would be foolish and a waste of American time and money.
