I get that it's a nice gesture. But the President didn't call every soldiers family in WW2. Or Vietnam. It was impossible due to sheer number of casualties.

Today with technology we only have dozens of casualties rather than thousands in short periods of time. But stick to tradition and don't make it expected for a family to get a call from the president. Just have someone send a generic letter to them. This will end any future stupid controversy over what was said in the call, and keep opposing parties from using the family for political points.

While I agree it shouldn't be politicized, I do not think it is a bad thing for the President of the United States to call the family of a soldier that died fighting for the United States.

I see your point, but you can't stop doing something just because the liberals like to throw a bitch fit over it. If we do that, we might as well all just kill ourselves now, because there will be nothing left to do in this world.

Trump shouldn’t be calling any dead soldier’s family. Ever.

this is the dumbest topic

someone's kid is dead or parent is dead...it really doesn't matter what you say, it's not getting through or making someone feel better. so long as you're not eating potato chips or chewing gum while you make the call, it's a nice gesture and is not easy to do. it may be just another number or name, but I would imagine it's personalized when you're on the line with the family.

and I think the president should do it any time he can do it.

Trump shouldn’t call, or give condolences for any living, breathing thing.

That's what burns my arse about all this. We will once again put something in the past that has been tradition for no telling how long, just because a few get bent out of shape by some insignificant something, so let's just do completely away with it to avoid controversy.

Folks, that's not preserving your culture, that's changing your culture. A little advice, be careful what you ask for.

I'm confused by your statement. Are you saying it is not ok for the leader of the armed forces to call fallen members' family and give them condolences?

When did presidents start calling the families of fallen soldiers? Except maybe one or two for political points.

It's been impossible to do until recently due to the sheer number of deaths in war.

Why start it now? If we get into a major conflict in the future with thousands of casualties we won't be able to do it then.

Bush called my buddies dad and wrote him a letter. I understand it was not feasible back in the day but what is so wrong about it now? Bush sent Jake to war and he died serving our country and his dad and I as well respected the shite out of him for it.

The President should be explaining why soldiers are dying in countries like Niger and what good it is doing for us to be in these countries. He wouldn’t have to call these families if he did what he promised and got us out of places we don’t belong.

a letter through old fashioned mail is probably better.
When you read some of the old letters,it's mind blowing, the consideration that is there.
