Because his Ego is on the block. He can't walk away just because his Ego won't let him. Putin's playing games in Trumps head. Zelensky told him, but that Ego. It's amazing how the Russians thought they could get away with a false flag, knowing that nearly every Listening/Satellite Station in Europe is focused on that region. Or they just don't care.

Trump is also not dumb.
He knows a huge contingent of MAGA has been drinking the Russian Kool Aid on Ukraine for going on 4 years now. He can't just be like "hey guys you're all morons and Putin has been manipulating you" because that's basically Pandora's box for the conspiratorial faction of MAGA.
Those yokels will fall on the Epstein sword but not the Ukraine one. It would unravel too many Russian-created narratives they've been mainlining for 6 years now
