I share the president's sentiments, but this was a dumb move politically.

It's only a day of remembrance... flags won't be at half-mast so no one will know or notice.

I don't understand defending a group of people who break our rules and cost taxpayers money while not paying into the system.

Yep. But people on here make these assessments because of that one buddy from {insert Hispanic country here.}

Brilliant move.

On the eve of the election will be something that grinds liberals gears

He comes up with the best trolls.

I hope every election in the future, this day will come up in some form for liberal candidates to address

I don't either, and that's the point I'm trying to make. Hispanics/Latinos don't see this the way we do.

Because I was teaching in Argentina, I had a private Spanish tutor for a couple of years. This was a bright, well educated woman (MA in Spanish Literature), and she used to make fun of our (ie Americans) penchant for seeing everything through the prism of logic and ration; our tendancy to "put things in perspective." She always chucked when she said that.

The Latin soul sees things differently. As someone in this thread said, this was an unforced error by Trump

And you say that based on what life experience?

Like I said I lived in Argentina for 6 years. I have also travelled through Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Mexico. I lived in Los Anglees , the city with the largest Hispanic population in America, for 27 years.

How about you?

Sounds like you didn't get much out of your travels.

You discredit yourself with throwing Brasil into the bunch.

If you go by how they count COVID deaths, it's up to 813,294,482 Americans killed by illegal aliens.

You think Brasileiros identify with the other countries you listed? Hell, you can barely get people from Sul to say Latino.

Case in point, a friend of mine legally immigrated here from Argentina about 20 years ago. He is a conservative and a registered Republican. But he voted against Trump last time and is voting for Biden this time because of Trump's talk about illegal immigrants. Like I said, tribal. And extremely sensitive about their patria .

Pretty damned good argument against legal immigration right there. Oh...and your friend should carry his worthless arse right back to Argentina.

Brazillians are Latinos.

Everyone of the countries I listed thinks they are different from every other country. And they are. But they all love each other more than they love America. There is a deep-seeded hatred for America in many, many parts of Central and South America.

According to the buckets we use up here? Sure. Do they self-identify as that, though? The answer to that in itself kills your tribalism assertion so I'll understand if you don't want to answer.

Uh huh. Like I said, you discredit yourself with your Brasil comments. There is definitely not the concensus you claim there.

I'm trying not to lose patience with you, but I really don't understand the point you're trying to make.

Latinos/Hispanics are tribal. It's a fact. Hell, someone posted a video on this board earlier in the week where conservative Latinos were discussing why Latinos vote Democrat, and the answer was that Latinos are tribal.

If you don't think that is the case, that's fine.

Is there anything else?

Yeah, I don't. And your extensive travels don't really convince me otherwise, considering how off some of your insights are. Somebody here might be impressed, though.
