Well I have no security clearance but can walk into a federal courthouse any time I want. And have many times. What am I missing?

You didn’t read the article

I don’t think you understand how this works. I’m pretty sure it isn’t all federal facilities. It’s secure federal facilities. You put too much faith in a sloppy article. If you really believe these lawyers are going to be prohibited from entering federal courthouses, then I don’t know what to say.

No, I just can’t believe people actually think that whatever Trump did here prohibits these lawyers from walking in a federal courthouse. I hate these people as much as anyone, but come on.

You don't need a security clearance to enter a federal courthouse. It's public and anyone can do it.

As someone who once had security clearance to federal courts…

Having a security clearance gives me quick access into the courthouse. I don’t have to wait in line and go through ordinary screening. Instead, I enter through a security clearance entrance only accessible to people with a security clearance. Moreover, I don’t have to run my computer, bag, briefcase, files. etc through X-ray. I can also bring in anything short of a gun (which must be stored in lockers outside the door regardless of clearance). So there is a convenience factor.

More importantly, a security clearance provides me access to parts of the courthouse that are off limits otherwise, such as judges chambers, conference rooms, inside the clerk’s office, etc. So not having a security clearance can make it almost impractical to do one’s work in the courthouse or at least make it very difficult.

When I worked for the DA during law school, my security clearance was provided by the Sheriff. When I worked for the DOJ after law school, my security clearances were provided by the FBI.

Now, I don’t know if this is the exact situation here and 20 years later. But at the very least, not having security clearance could be a hindrance to James.
