The freeze would prevent about 1,000 traffic fatalities a year and save $500 billion in societal costs, according to EPA and DOT estimates. That proposal also laid the groundwork for EPA to revoke California’s ability to set its own tailpipe standards for carbon dioxide emissions.
Thank you, President Trump!

Is it just me, but what does changing the fuel economy standards have to do with traffic fatalities?

People driving less and being able to afford newer safer cars.
New standards would raise the cost of vehicles and people would opt to stay in older, less safe vehicles.

No, he isn't. If you care to read the preceding paragraph in the link

In August, the Trump administration proposed freezing fuel economy standards at 37 miles per gallon in 2020 on grounds Obama-era standard raised car prices, forcing people to drive older, less safe vehicles.

For once, I trust my federal government more than my state government.
However, it's hard to argue that the commerce clause hasnt morphed into an overreaching and overbearing beast.
I agree with that beast for now though, so I'll allow it.

Also for new cars, bigger cars (that burn more fuel) are inherently safer. There are exceptions but as long as F=MxA that will generally hold true.
