Yes and no. Some people fought for slavery. Some people fought for the rights of states to own slaves. Some fought for the rights of states to dictate how they want to govern (slavery or not). Some fought because they thought the Union/North were just enemies. Many fought and died who didn't give a lick about slaves.

There was no widespread abolition movement at the time. Remember there were slave states in the Union.
