Trade Wars: Trump Plan to Withdraw from Postal Treaty

Bloomberg
Yuge deal that is going to bring more money back into the United States than tariffs. Basically, a UN committee sets international shipping rates based on some arbitrary metric of how poor a country is, and the USPS is forced to use those rates. China has leveraged this disfunctional trade deal to resell shite to the west cheaper than we can ship it to ourselves.
However, I’m sure IB Freeman has great explanation as to why we need to continue subsidizing our own enemies so they can destroy us by a thousand cuts.

President Donald Trump plans to withdraw the U.S. from a 192-nation treaty that gives Chinese companies discounted shipping rates for small packages sent to American consumers, another escalation of his economic confrontation of Beijing.
quote:
the discounts amount to a subsidy for Chinese shippers that cost the U.S. Postal Service $170 million in 2017. The treaty sets fees that national postal services charge to deliver mail and small packages from other countries. Poor and developing countries are assessed lower rates than wealthier countries, an arrangement that has benefited China.

We should not subsidize anything nor should we have protectionist tariffs for politically influential industries.

You seem to have a one track mind.
How would you propose to handle a situation where country X specifically targets critical industries in your country in order to shut them down over years, then use their newfound monopoly to their advantage?

Do you have an example?????
There seems to be this idea on this forum that 1) China has made a fortune from manufacturing over the past 40 years which is true 2) and that they did this by making things below cost of production--explain that.
Do the Chinese subsidize industries? yes Does the United States? yes. BUT neither does it to the extent that it inhibits the growth of their countries. Neither country can finance production below cost of their entire economy and have the capital to grow their economy.
What you fail to realize is that when a country does something stupid like that it creates growth in the countries they export too.
Our economy is MUCH better off because the Chinese have made things and sell things to us cheaper than we can make it ourselves.
This idea that we have been "screwed" because of foreign trade with Japan or China or South Korea is just not true. The numbers are there to prove the point. How did our economy grow as much as it has since Nixon went to China in 74 if we were getting screwed?
China cannot continue to subsidize some of the industries they subsidize. Anyone that takes the time to research that all will see that is true. If you want to screw China buy twice as much of the products you think they are subsidizing so you force them deeper in debt.
VietNam and all of South East Asia is growing economically very quickly and a lot of the lower end manufacturing once done in China has moved to those countries. It is very much like what happened to Taiwan and Japan. In the sixties they made all the junk--as their economies grew their labor became more costly and they moved up the ladder so to speak and were no longer competitive with China. People like the people posting here hated Japan in 1985 and wanted them punished too. All kinds of idiots were saying the Japanese would own America.
We are at the highest employment ever. We have the highest wages ever. Our trade deficit with China has grown tremendously this year. Those are facts and simply do not support this idea that we are being screwed.
We are screwed when our government decides consumers and manufacturers should pay more for goods from politically influential industries made by influential union labor.
I still predict that China will give something to Trump at the G20 meeting (50% chance in my mind) that he will declare victory with and he will step back from he 25% tariffs he has planned for January. What they will give him will benefit China--I predict they will come up with some waver of the forced partnerships they require of foreign companies manufacturing in China. They need foreign investment and will move to get it. Vice Premier He wants this. This also goes a long way in the IP protection issue.
You are badly mistaken if you think this about ending Chinese imports or even Chinese dumping. It is about the ability of US multinational companies to have freer access to Chinese markets INCLUDING building plants in China.

This is thinking the Trumpkins here agree with.
Forget the jobs lost and profits lost at the customers of these greedy, protectionist seeking companies. It is as TigerHuskers wants---it is about screwing everyone but the union members. Non union Louisiana manufacturer?--screw you. Manager in a union shop?--screw you.
This is EXACTLY who Trump is catering too and every conservative should be concerned.
