I think it's more than that. Political criticism through US history has been humorous from both sides.
If the President was left wing the right would make fun. But if the Congress at the same time was right wing the left would make fun of them.
Memes really go back to newspaper political cartoons that were dominant in the pre-TV age.
What I'm seeing now is a basic lack of wit by leftists. Trump was in power for 4 years. The comedy on TV satirizing Trump was not funny at all.
Leftists in the audience never laughed. They just applauded and went 'Woooo.'
I'm convinced that part of the psychology of being a leftist is being devoid of wit.
