The GOP can either be a perennially-tiny minority or regional party with perfect ideological unity, or it can be a competitive national party comprised of coalitions of people with similar (but not identical) overlapping views.
It cannot be both.
The "pure" party that people here seem to want? It will never win a presidency or control a Congressional chamber again. Party leadership has the intelligence to understand this, even if the fringe elements of its membership does not.

Pretty ironic, coming from someone who mostly identifies with libertarians, with scores of libertarians refusing to vote for those who agree with them 80 percent of the time, choosing to be a perennially tiny minority.
