but the OP said police were called to the home 36 times, not that he was arrested 36 times. That doesn't mean crimes were committed, only that the police were requested to have a visit there.

Correct. 36 calls, though indicates something is going on...either the mother needs help, or the son needs help, or both.

Our justice system is predicated on the notion that people are punished (justice provided) for crimes they commit, not for ones they haven't. If he didn't commit any crimes that would have prevented him from legally purchasing a firearm, then the system worked (from that perspective).

Correct. I'm not arguing that he should have been prevented from buying the firearm by the government. I'm making the point that the data was there for people to intervene; and that doesn't mean government intervention.

36 little crimes let go by the cops?

Just because the cops get called on you does not mean you broke a law.

His lawyer put her arm around him in court and comforted him, other lawyer said "the child is mourning the loss of his mother." CHILD? Nice try.

Child my arse. I was a soldier at 18. A man.

Ok, so what then? You arrest someone for a future crime they are about to commit? Then where does this limitation start and stop?

Yet apparently it was the gun killed 17 people... I bet if I was holding that gun nobody would have died.
