It’s definitely going to a referendum, that’s an afterthought at this moment as it will be before the citizens in 2026. What most Americans don’t realize or care for that matter, was that Quebec was less than 1% away from actual succession in 1995.
Alberta has been represented by the Federal Conservative Party for 46 of the past 50 years and a collation of the Provincial Conservative Party and Federal Conservative Party appears imminent.
I’d laugh my arse off if Alberta’s cause re-ignites that fire in Quebec and Carney is faced with a two pronged crisis that will tear Canada apart right in front of everyone’s eyes.
“President Trump has upended Canadian politics and offered Alberta’s secessionist a new political route forward.”

quote:
The current Alberta premier, Danielle Smith, has opened the door to a referendum by lowering the threshold for a citizen initiative to hold a referendum to a mere 10% of the votes cast in the most recent election. In practice this means that gathering just 177,000 signatures would be enough to put the measure before voters next year.

If Alberta were to go, Saskatchewan and Manitoba won't be far behind. That's 70% of Canadian energy production, and nearly all of Canada's bread basket. That's two very powerful levers to pull when imposing your will against a Liberal Government. Mark Carney isn't stupid, he knows this.
