re: The trade showdown with China is at it's heart a national security issue.

no matter how many times i tell npc90 and ib this, they won't listen. 90 is more concerned with a "cost-benefit" analysis of the tariffs as compared to the tpp and ib is more concerned about his bottom line

if China continues to move toward capitalism
quote:so you don't think it's a zero sum game. i'm listening
The talk that China’s rise means our decline is just crazy talk
quote:omg the rally cry of the progressive liberal. get this, we have real enemies who want to destroy us. our military presence around the world helps to keep the fight on foreign soil instead of it coming to us soil. i'm sorry you're too naive to understand this.
I would rather we concentrate on reducing our devotion to our role of world policemen
quote:so you think china ISN'T out to sink us or dominate the world? you're naive, that's all you had to say
we declare somebody out for world domination
quote:not if a particular country is an enemy and is stealing our r&d to use against us. it's like you didn't even read the title of the thread. my gosh you are dense
It’s just foolish to reduce the number of sources of goods and services available to Americans
quote:so china isn't building bases in the south pacific. that's all made up conspiracy theory stuff.
You people sound like the fearmongers

that graphic is stupid. the us economy is soaring and the chinese economy is getting crushed.

quote:you are wrong. you don't even understand the subject. are you seriously suggesting that the chinese leadership is, whether intentionally or not, abandoning communism in favor of a completely open and free market? please tell me you don't believe that.
they have moved dramatically toward capitalism the last 40 years and that is just fact

IB Freeman says tariffs are bad
Bad is a relative term. It assumes that maximum productivity at all times is desired and ignores other important factors.
While I inherently dislike Trump identifying himself as a "tariff man", I understand that there is sometimes utility in instituting tariffs for national security reasons, even though many times national security is claimed as a reason for unnecessary tariffs that in no way produce benefits from the standpoint of national security.
Tariffs as a means of creating jobs makes little economic sense. Historically, jobs created in one sector are offset by jobs lost in others.
I also have my doubts that we can ever defeat China in a tariff war, simply because we have a privileged populace with a lower pain tolerance. That being said, it won't stop me from voting for the guy again in 2020.
Who else would I vote for? Biden or the string of budding socialists?
