OP is right but not how he thinks he is. The children of the 60s generation grew up hearing about a romanticized version of the 60s with the youth of America changing history with civil rights and Vietnam protests ad nauseum from their parents and the media and decided they wanted to live in an era like that too. Problem is you can't make political causes happen artificially and get an authentic movement. They wanted to be the next generation to change the world but, unlike the 60s, there was nothing that needed changing so they had to imagine things in their mind that needed changing that weren't actually existing.
