I think the dims have once again painted themselves into a corner. Rand Paul's call for a vote was a clear signal that there is no shot at getting the necessary 2/3rd's vote to convict.

Even if it makes it past today, there is no legitimate chance of showing that Trump could have "incited" a pre-planned riot, and only provides him with platform to exonerate himself and highlight the dim hypocrisy in actually calling for violence against fellow Americans.

The vote to call witnesses has less than 0% chance of passing leaving the Senate with the choice to vote on a single flawed & rushed article of impeachment, which the house passed after a few hours of debate and with no witness testimony. DOA.

The dims are once again forced to sleep in prickly beds they have made for themselves which can only result in net positives for Trump.

Incredible. They are committing more time to debate the constitutionality of impeaching/removing a private citizen than the house took to impeach a sitting president.

Hint: both outcomes have been predetermined.

This could be a good thing. The more time these geniuses spend on the impeachment the less time they have to really f everything else up.

100%. The vote doesn't matter. They'll drag this thing out as long as possible just to attempt to tarnish Trump. They know beyond a shadow of a doubt they can't convict, but they'll attempt to inflict maximum damage anyways.

I think you are probably correct, but the way this thing is laid out procedurally, it ensures that, unless only 33 repub senators vote that this trial is unconstitutional (unlikely given the earlier vote and the high chance of political fallout), everything thereafter is admittedly politically useless theater.

That’s what I think.

There is zero chance of anything happening to Trump.

There is 100 percent chance that this is a complete waste of time. Democrats wasting time, is better than them spending time on actually passing their moronic and suicidal ideas about legislation

There will be 52-55 votes to proceed.

The legal question of whether the trial can proceed against a FORMER official is unanswered by the courts, though there is Senate precedent for doing so. (Grant's Secretary of War).

With one or two POSSIBLE exceptions, all Dems will vote to proceed, for political reasons.

About half of GOP Senators will vote against proceeding, also for solely political reasons. MOST of the rest will vote against proceeding, claiming it is a constitutional assessment, but ACTUALLY for political reasons for most of them. A small handful will vote to proceed because that is how they read the Constitution.

Zero chance of the 2/3 necessary to convict, but they DO reach the stage of making that vote.

Did you not notice with the first impeachment...the Dems loved it.

They will take this sham and run with it. Their supporters will applaud it. The outcome is irrelevant.

Article 1, Section 3,6
The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, ***the Chief Justice shall preside***: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

The only reason to have an impeachment on a former President is to set precedence for future impeachment’s of former Presidents.

Only orange-colored glasses would cause one to see the matter differently.

There are some interesting constitutional/procedural/legal questions involved in this debacle. That is NOT one of them.

How about a complete lack of due process. While the house makes the rules, I guess expectations that due process as a foundation of our legal system is another long held belief to fade away.
