The bill was going to pass anyway. Why not make the Dems go the discharge petition route?

Make them own it.

He could have put forth a bare bones spending bill and made them own shutting down the government.

Then...make them petition all the pork in separate bills like he said he was going to do.

Instead Johnson giftwrapped it and allowed the GOP base to be pissed at all the GOP reps.

He gave away all the leverage and turned the base against them all.

You're conflating two different things. The discharge petition was for the Ukraine bill, not the omnibus.

If you don't pass a spending bill the government shuts down.

Because Dems and 90% of the Republicans are on the same team.

MTG mentioned this as a reason for the motion to vacate.

Yep, she mentioned this as well.

We'll have a Dem House pretty soon with these resignations.

Once again, you don't shut down the government in an election year. It's a strategic error that hands the Democrats a golden gift to use in ads from now to November.

It's never ending excuses for the cowardice of Republicans.

I've already explained this once in another thread.

The Dems have offered (allegedly) to support Johnson keeping his speakership if he allows a vote on the Ukraine bill.

So one of two things is going to happen, both bad. W
Either billions are going to Ukraine or the Republicans are about to look like total dipshits again over a speaker fight because attention whore MTG wanted the spotlight.

Because the discharge petition would require, and would get, significant Republican votes.

It’s really incredibly simple. The GOP doesn’t have the leverage that you guys want it to have.

Because going through a discharge petition and having it pass with Republican votes anyway is some sort of brave act?

And I explained to you.

She said it was a warning and he could save himself.

He left himself open to this. He knew damn well she could do this.

Maybe he underestimated how much of a raving idiot she is. She's right up there with Hank "Guam may tip over" Johnson and AOC.

again...

I doubt the republicans would vote for a LGBTQ retirement home.

Doesn't work that way. Republicans are in the majority. They would own shutting down the government and the media would bang that drum for the next 6 months.

One that his own party wouldn’t be unified in supporting?

How would the Speaker make them do this? Remember, the majority of members of the House support the bill and the Ukraine funding, etc. you act like the speaker has some sort of magic wand.

If the GOP conference was rock solid and unified in that course of action, you’d be right. But it isn’t, so you aren’t.
