The deception will never end. The average refund is lower because less tax was taken from the people.

I had projected we'd owe around $18k but it ended up being less than half that.

I signed my completed tax form with my accountant yesterday. I'm getting $1,200 from the federal govt and $50 from the state. That's the biggest federal refund I've gotten in my life.
Checking the last 5 years my average return from the fed was near zero. A couple hundred owed one year and a couple hundred coming back the next.

Bottom line, tax refund all things equal, well into retirement fixed income, is about 2500 dollars better this year than last.
