It's simply the laws of free market economics. LSU football is a bad example because they receive no money from the school (only 4 such college programs are self funded...Rutgers is the most heavily subsidized by the school).
But the rule is... money results in your ability to make people happy. Then throw in how rare your ability is.
IE, Labron James makes more people happy than Brooke Henderson (the top American LPGA golfer). So, he makes a lot more money.
If everyone could play like Labron James then his salary would be greatly reduced.
It takes a rare group of coaches and facilities to give a school a shot at being a football power. If being a football power didn't make tons of people happy then no one would bother with the investment.

Biology teachers make very few people happy. But good biology teachers are more rare than good Eng lit teachers. That's why at almost all colleges the biology prof makes more than the Lit prof.
