Apart? Must be a teen editor.

This happened within walking distance to my wife's hospital. She works late sometimes and she always makes sure to leave work in groups or with security escort.
There is a lot of inner city violence here that, if it made the national news, would keep tourists far away.

Memphis is a dump. Things like this happen in dumps. Look to Baltimore for a parallel, which should resonate well with you.
American cities are safer than they have been in years.

I agree 100%....but Memphis does have some awesome suburbs. Most of the major employers are located "out east" as well.
There's a lot of violent crime here that would scare the tourists away if they knew about it.

With the exception of a few anomalies blacks are a failed people. Every effort has been made to improve that community to no avail.
Prolifically jailing them, rendering them unemployable for years and years, sure was an effort to help.

Is this connected or disconnected to the rate at which they committed crimes?

....if only the prolific jailing actually encompassed the violent offenders in this particular attack. Clearly it isn't prolific enough.

Why does anyone live in or visit Memphis? Why don't people just move away, work somewhere else?

Memphis is a dangerous city. White, black, glow in the dark green... it is a typical big, but poor, city. Since it is such a patchwork city, nice neighborhoods surrounded by very not so nice neighborhoods, it is even more difficult to stay out of harm's way there.
You don't get comments like "Well stay out of such and such and you shouldn't have any trouble." While there are some really bad parts of town by the nature of Memphis they are lurking right next to the parts of town you'd go to.
It is a particular concern for me since my parents live across the river from Memphis so their medical care, high end shopping, and so on is in Memphis or on the other side of the city in the Memphis suburbs.
Memphis after dark is not a safe place to be.

No video of the incident?
that would show the "teen mob" is a group of black thugs, not some innocent youths at looking for some harmless fun as many of the reports would have you believe.

I agree. Why anyone would want to live in Memphis is beyond me.

I do not consider personal drug use to be criminal, which is what we are discussing. Sentence terms have skyrocketed amidst the drug war. Furthermore, research shows that whites use drugs at similar rates to minorities, yet are locked up at significantly lower rates.
Violent crime has dropped steadily, as property crime has; yet here we sit, breaking incarceration records year after year.

The Commissary in German Town is famous for their coconut pie; but, they make the best banana pudding in the world.
I only hope that some day, The Commissary will adopt sweet tamales to their above average tamale line up.
Just make sure to hire private security, if you're deployed to Memphis.

I don't think it's a dodge, but rather an honest assessment of the situation.
We throw socially disruptive people in prison like we are doing them a favor, when in reality, all we are doing is subsidizing their existence with the world's costliest babysitters.
