This might be the dumbest post of the day. Florida’s Insurance market is expensive, no doubt. But it is not the result of Govt action or inaction. Period.
There are 1,350 miles of coastline in Florida. A lot of that coastline are built up with multi-million dollar homes. That’s a crap ton of risk for insurers to take, especially when over the past few years there have been several major hurricanes that caused major losses. Several insurance companies went bankrupt. My insurance company went bankrupt after Hurricane Sally in 2020. But thankfully Florida has FIGA, which is a fund that covers losses (up to $500k) when insurers go bankrupt.
3,000 people a day are moving here. And these ain’t poors. These are wealthy people, moving here and that drives up home values, which in turn drives up insured amounts.
Several insurance companies have said eff it. The juice ain’t worth the squeeze. So what happens to prices when fewer insurers are competing over an even riskier market?
But keep thinking this can be solved with more government.
