Most likely. This is the trend in liberal progressive controlled education and media.

“Now the Broward County Public Schools says it will allow the Bible as part of the Accelerated Reader Program,” Jeremiah Dys, senior counsel at the conservative Liberty Institute, said in a statement.
He continued, “We are pleased they are now complying with the law and will allow students to read their Bible during free reading time and within the Accelerated Reader program.”

free time
Not exactly.

Previously, the district reportedly argued that the student, 12-year-old Giovanni Rubeo, was not reading his Bible during free time and that the incident possibly took place during the Accelerated Reader program.
BUT...

But this, too, became a problem when the Liberty Institute noted that 60 of the Bible’s 66 books are allowed for consumption during this time as well.

This seems like a non-issue to me. The school district came down on the side of the Church in two weeks.

You are terrible at interpreting arguments.
Their religion has nothing to do with his point.
It's the law that is based on a religious construct that is oppressing them.

I've never been able to figure out why these types get so butthurt over something they don't believe in.

Its because as much as they say they don't believe. Every human has the knowledge in them and know that life isn't a accident.
You've now created doubt in my mind that all LSU fans aren't idiots!

so now we have to go to the US Department of Education for permission to read Bibles in class?

No. It's already been established that a student can read his bible of his own volition in his own time with no reprisals. Either some teachers haven't been taught this, or choose to ignore it?

It looks like in this case the school district resolved the matter on its own.
So why is this thread still going on?

Sasser said the school violated the boy’s constitutional rights. He also accused them of viewpoint discrimination, restricting the free exercise of religion and engaging in hostility towards religion.
They're only hostile towards certain points of view and religion, and this in the face of the Constitution of the United States of America they supposedly operate under.
This is a clear violation of liberty and religious freedom.

Sounds like the father knew this was going to cause problems when the article says he instructed his kid on what to do when the teacher confronted him.
Just another case of a religious nut trying to cause waves. He used his son to cause them.
Liberalese: If its my opinion that makes it a fact.
Got it!
So what? You just proved the father was correct by exposing the bias in education against the Constitution.

I love self imposed board police that tell others when a thread should end. It will end like the rest by its own lack of interest.

The teacher is an idiot, I see no issue with a student reading the Bible or any other religious text during free reading time. Anyone who would agree with her has a serious axe to grind here. If anything it should be encouraged, I believe everyone should make an effort to read all major religious texts for the literary experience as well as allowing for a fair judgement to be made regarding which spiritual path to take. People who simply ignore religion and have never studied the primary documents have no real basis for mocking and rejecting them.
However, I think we all know that many Christians would have no problem if the student had been wearing Islamic garb and reading the Koran. This goes both ways.

Possibly, but I never understand the angst? Why get bent out of shape by something you consider fiction? The bible to her should be no different than The Lord of the Rings.
In this case you are correct, but where many get bent out of shape is when Christians try and legislate their beliefs. That does effect them and is therefore worth discussing and fighting.
In this case, it's simply a free exercise of religion.
