Sounds like the father knew this was going to cause problems when the article says he instructed his kid on what to do when the teacher confronted him.
Just another case of a religious nut trying to cause waves. He used his son to cause them.
So the State can violate the constitution so long as someone sets them up?

Teacher probably violated the Free Exercise clause in this case. Unfortunately, sports don't yet qualify as a religion.
They do in Alabama

Perhaps he is simply an American Christian that knows his rights and wants to teach his son those rights and won't allow himself or his son to be rolled?

What constitutional provision was violated? If you say free exercise, I'll expect you to tell me exactly how it was violated.
There is probably so much missing from this story it's absurd. The one thing we do know is that the father had to give his son special instructions, which smells hella fishy to me.

Sounds to me like the kid was simply minding his own business by reading his Bible when the teacher told him to stop. The boy's father simply told him to stand up for himself if again confronted by his teacher's intolerance.

Special instructions? You mean telling his son that he has a constitutional right to read his bible in his free time if initiated by the boy? That's some nefarious plot?!

Whether he set it up or not, it doesn't absolve the teacher's wrongdoing. I'm not religious at all, but this sets a very dangerous precedent. What if he wanted to read it simply out of curiosity? Just to learn about different religions?

Free exercise + RFRA.
The school is the State and the restriction of religious expression was not narrowly tailored.

To me, it seems like this happened once and the kid complied, but told his father after school. The father then told his kid that the what the teacher told his kid was not right and instructed the kid on what to do if the teacher did it again. When the teacher responded to the bible a second time, the kid did what he was told and called his parents. This isn't a "set up". This is a kid being told what not to read during "free reading". It's another example of "it's all ok" or "nothing is ok". Either all religious texts need to be allowed, or none of them can be allowed.
Just as I think a kid should be allowed to read his bible during "free reading" time, so should a kid be allowed to read "The Koran", "50 Shades of Grey", "The Gospel According to the Flying Speghetti Monster", "The Audacity of Hope", or whatever kind of mindless drivel they want. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's better for them than watching reality tv all day.
It has to be either that, or only "approved" works of fiction with no religious texts, and with fiction books covering inappropriate topics banned.

False he was told to stop reading his bible in a class where students have free reading time they can read what they want.
So if he can't read the bible than he can read anything except the bible. You are banning the reading of a bible and no good reason to do so. That violates the first amendment.

It seems like this teacher by the tone of the voicemail she left has a chip on her shoulder against religion.

Possibly, but I never understand the angst? Why get bent out of shape by something you consider fiction? The bible to her should be no different than The Lord of the Rings.
