To blame Smoot/Hawley as the sole reason for it is not based in facts.
Check out the unemployment rate before and after the market crash of ‘29.
Then check out the unemployment rate after Smoot-Hawley was passed.
You’re correct that Smoot-Hawley didn’t cause the GD, but, it turned what was an economic correction into a Depression.

That’s a really long way to say ‘tariffs are taxes’.
He's yet to offer any support beyond this magical hand-waving. You can get him to admit that tariffs increase cost but the next sentence is some vague claim about how the increase gets offset by unicorns and puppies.
Unless you're an anarchist taxes aren't inherently bad, tariffs included. Government has to be funded somehow. But just like our income tax system has downsides, tariffs do as well.

I didn't bring it up. I corrected someone trying to cherry-pick the data.

Foreigners tariff our goods, and subsidize their own industry. They also buy up the US dollar to make it an expensive currency. All of this makes us less competitive, none of that is because of “free trade”
And yes there are benefits to buying goods that another nation subsidizes to make (basically subsidizing our purchase price). But in a crisis you have no industry. You also do not have steady, decent jobs for the lower classes. Small towns are vanishing because it’s impossible to sustain local economies. This puts more pressure on big city housing prices.
Libertarian economics are mostly great. But people seem to forget that there is a (large) political aspect to economics, it’s not just supply/demand

You would be hard pressed to find an economist that agrees with that. As point out by Creed, Milton doesn't agree with you at all.

Protectionism can go too far: Insulating firms from any concern about foreign competition could lead to stagnation
How so? If tariffs are so wonderful, and if they create all these jobs without increasing costs, while simultaneously eliminating the need for the income tax, why wouldn’t even higher tariffs create even more wealth and employment? I mean, it could be 1914 on steroids.
That’s the basic fallacy of your position. It’s no different than those that claim raising the minimum wage drives wage growth or welfare / food stamps increase economic activity. Sure it might, but at what cost? Because we truly believed that, we would increase the minimum wage to $3,000/hr and quadruple welfare benefits.

Well, except for the part where he does.

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act has come to symbolize protectionism run mad. It has been blamed for both the 1929 stock-market crash and the subsequent Depression. In my view, that gives it too much “credit.” However, it did impose heavy costs on the American consumer, did deepen the Depression, and did usher in a decade of “beggar-thy-neighbor policies” around the world.
