I was going to post this in the OT, but then thought it better to post it here.

The recent suicides by Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain seem to bring the topic to the forefront - again. I looked up the suicide rates in Louisiana (by parish) and noticed something really strange about 5 of the top 10 parishes.

Question for the Poli Board: What factors might be contributing to this unusual grouping ("The Suicide Belt")?

Could be. I can't find a great resource to look at drugs by parish. Best I could find is here and it looks incomplete.

I looked at poverty rates and nothing jumped out. Are those the most white parishes in Louisiana?

What's the time frame? Were those always higher or just within the last five years?

could it be unemployment rate, education, drugs? I bet all 3 have plenty to do with it. No leadership in the school systems that are failing and the police are scared to hit these drug heads head on.

Interesting looking at cancer deaths in the link, "Cancer Alley" is not represented well at the top of the list

Is an drug overdose considered a suicide? Seems like if a person takes an illegal drug and/or over uses a prescribed drug and dies then it would be reasonable IMO to classify it as a self inflicted death.

Up to the coroner, with all the OD deaths and the relatively close suicide rates the suicide ranking statistics are skewed by how the coroner wants to classify.

5 different coroners from 5 different parishes? Hmmm....

Do you know the answer? I'm genuinely curious, I like this detective stuff.
