When I had a fence put around a major portion of my back yard so my dogs could romp without getting into trouble, I made a contract with the white owner of the fencing company, but a Latino guy actually did the work.

When we had a bunch of major tree work done after hurricanes in 2011 and 2012 as well as having dead branches pruned, we made contracts with white arborists, but the guys 60 feet up in the trees and on the ground with chain saws were all Latinos.

When we had Belgian block put in around the edge of our property, our chimney repaired and pavers put in at the end of our driveway, we made an agreement with the owner of the masonry company, but the workers were all Latinos.

Those jobs took place over several years. I spoke with all of the workers, usually while feeding them lunch. I did not ask any questions about their immigration status, but one guy volunteered that he was going "back home" as soon as he could save enough money.

I have no idea how their employers paid them or whether they had payroll and income taxes withheld. But all of them, to a man, were hard working and skilled at what they were doing.

I'd hire any of them today if I had the work to do.
