Well when you continually try to get rid of the precise mechanism that makes us a republic, the EC...it needs to be pointed out to these people that we are not, and have never been, a +1 democracy.

History has shown that democracy is a particularly fragile institution. In fact, of the 120 new democracies that have emerged around the world since 1960, nearly half have resulted in failed states or have been replaced by other, typically more authoritarian forms of government. It is therefore essential that democracies be designed to respond quickly and appropriately to the internal and external factors that will inevitably threaten them.

Then why did they always rely on elections?
Because they gave us a representative republic. One in which we democratically elect our representation. That in no way means we are a democracy. Every time I think you are smarter than the most idiotic position on an issue, you prove me wrong.

That's what government has become. Democracy has always been an anathema to freedom and liberty, as our Founding Fathers knew, which is why they gave us a republic instead of a democracy.

Wrong. We're a republic. You can spice it up any way you want, call it a Democratic Republic if you want, but we are a Republic.

We are a Republic first and foremost. Being held together with our Constitution. With some Democracy features under that umbrella. Ie...on election day.
Stop falling for the Leftie gaslighting as they want full on Democracy and that's anti-American. Ie..."Fundamental Transformation of America"

You may be one of the most ignorant posters on here, in terms of politics and sports....that is saying a lot.
edit: You are in a tough battle with SFP....I will say that. It is a tossup.

That doesn't require democracy/elections.

So we're a democracy. Thanks.
quote:
That in no way means we are a democracy.
It literally means we are a democracy.
We're not a direct or true democracy. But we are a democracy.
Just as republics can come in different forms, so can democracies.

That's what government has become
No that's government.
quote:
Democracy has always been an anathema to freedom and liberty
So has government.
We give up some freedom for security/stability. That's the social contract.
Political rhetoric, at its core, is a discussion of where that line is moved.
quote:
Founding Fathers knew, which is why they gave us a republic instead of a democracy.
That discussion has little to do with the social contract one you're trying to have.

This is wrong.
We rely on democracy to form that republic. The democratic parts can remove the republic parts a hell of a lost easier than vice versa.

Having elections doesn't make a country a democracy. North Korea, the old USSR, Nazi Germany, they all had elections. Using the democratic process to select representatives does not make the country a democracy. What the hell is wrong with you?
Posted on 10/11/24 at 2:50 pm to TN Tygah
This is a stupid argument because right now it’s neither we’re getting closer and closer to full socialism

That's what a democracy is.
a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections
Meriam Webster
You can look up others. The term involves populations voting in elections.

North Korea, the old USSR, Nazi Germany, they all had elections.
Not real ones, which is why they're not considered democracies.
They are often republics, though, funny enough, even with the fake elections.

What do you think makes a country a democracy, exactly?

What the hell is wrong with you?
An attachment to reality and logic, apparently.

Cool.
We are a constitutional -x, first and foremost. The Founders showed this by....writing one and then redoing it a few years later.
They also immediately had elections, so their dedication to democracy was always there along with their support of the republican form of government.

republicI now understand how the left says that Donald J. Trump is a threat to democracy.
Thank God President Trump stands for our REPUBLIC.

I don’t really know what to call this country. Yes we go through the motions of picking someone every four years that we expect to act as a benevolent king. But it’s obvious they have no real power whatsoever. We can guess who’s running the country but we really have no idea and I don’t know what to call that other than hell

A democracy is a country where majority rules, unrestrained by things like the Constitution, the Electoral College and three separate yet equal branches of government. We don't have that, and intentionally so. We simply use a democratic process to elect our representatives to government, all of which are bound and restrained individually and collectively by the Constitution. At least that's the way it is supposed to work.
